1. Tea

It’s a common myth that drinking tea is bad for your teeth. In reality, the truth is the opposite. Tea is one healthy food for teeth that most people don’t know about. One research study compared the effects of rinsing your mouth with water and black tea. People who used black tea to rinse their mouths for one minute ten times a day had less plaque build-up than those who used water.

There’s more than just a research study supporting this; there’s proof. Black and green teas contain compounds called polyphenols. These compounds slow the growth of bacteria that can damage your teeth and gums. That bacteria has been known to cause gum disease and cavities. It’s also believed that polyphenols fight bad breath by limiting the growth of smelly compounds in your mouth. So for good breath, healthy teeth, and healthy gums, tea is a great beverage choice.

2. Crunchy Foods

Eating crunchy foods is a lot of work. But that work has a major benefit. It’s believed that chewing crunchy foods disturbs the plaque and prevents it from building up. Similar to brushing your teeth, eating crunchy foods cleans your teeth in a natural way.

But don’t run to grab a bag of potato chips. Look for something crunchy with a high water content, like celery, carrots, or cucumbers. The more difficult it is to chew, the better it is for removing plaque and giving you healthy teeth.

3. Milk

May breakfast cereals have very a high sugar content, which is damaging to your teeth. However, drinking milk can help you to counteract that affect. According to research by the American Dental Association, drinking one glass of milk after eating dry Fruit Loops dropped acid levels in the mouth more than drinking water or juice.

Milk is able to neutralize the acid produced by plaque. But there’s a catch. When you put milk in the cereal, it’s not good for healthy teeth and healthy gums. The milk takes in some of the sugar from the cereal and can damage your teeth. So, the best way to fight plaque is to drink a glass of milk immediately after you eat something sweet.

Although cheese and milk are both dairy products, they have different effects on your mouth. They are, however, both food for healthy teeth. In a study of girls aged 12 – 15 years, those who ate cheddar cheese had lower acid levels in their mouths than those who are yogurt or drank milk. 5. Spinach

Spinach is great for your body, but did you know it’s great for your teeth and gums too? Along with other leafy greens, spinach has a lot of calcium and folic acid. Folic acid helps the cells in your mouth repair any damage done by gum disease. And while folic acid fights gum disease, calcium prevents it. Not getting enough calcium makes you more likely to get gum disease.

6. Garlic

Garlic is a healthy food for teeth. And although you might not want to eat raw garlic alone, there are plenty of ways to incorporate garlic into your daily diet. If you’re not in the mood to cook with it, you can always take a garlic extract supplement.

Garlic contains allicin, a biological component of garlic that has many beneficial properties. It works as an anti-bacterial agent, killing the bacteria it comes into contact with. When you eat garlic. the allicin fight off bacteria in you mouth which can fight off gum disease. And as an added benefit, it boosts your immune system.

7. Shiitake Mushrooms

Usually an ingredient in Asian food, shiitake mushrooms don’t just add a lot of flavor to your food. They also have anti-microbial properties that make for healthy teeth. The mushrooms contain something called lentinan, which works to fight off bad bacteria.

You can eat the mushrooms raw or cook them in a variety of ways to incorporate them into your diet. Try sauteing them with garlic to give your teeth and gums extra protection.

You don’t have to look much further than your pantry to find food for healthy teeth. Food like onions, kiwis, and sweet potatoes can all help you keep your teeth and gums healthy.
